What is OSHC?

The Essential Health Cover for International Students in Australia

Hello to all international students planning to study in Australia! Preparing to study abroad involves many considerations, from your chosen course and visa to accommodation. But equally important is “health insurance”. In Australia, we have a specific type of health cover for international students called Overseas Student Health Cover, or OSHC!

Today, Pynch Education will explain what OSHC is, why it’s so important, and what it typically covers, so you’re fully prepared to begin your new life in the land of kangaroos.

What is OSHC? Why is it Mandatory?

OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) is compulsory health insurance for international students travelling to Australia for their studies. You are required to maintain OSHC throughout the entire duration of your student visa in Australia, and it is a crucial requirement when applying for your student visa.

Why is it mandatory?

The Australian government wants to ensure that all international students have access to necessary healthcare services whilst residing in the country. As medical costs in Australia can be quite high, having OSHC helps to cover these expenses, giving you peace of mind and alleviating worries about unexpected medical bills.

What Does OSHC Typically Cover?

Each OSHC policy may vary in detail depending on the provider, but generally, OSHC covers essential healthcare costs such as:

 * GP Visits (General Practitioner): Consultation fees and services when you visit a General Practitioner (GP) at a clinic.

 * Hospital Treatment: Costs for hospital stays, surgeries, and medical treatment incurred whilst admitted to a hospital.

 * Ambulance Services: Fees for emergency ambulance services.

 * Prescription Medicines: Helps to cover a portion of the cost of medicines prescribed by a doctor and listed in the covered medication schedule.

 * Pathology & Radiology: Such as blood tests, X-rays, and ultrasounds.

Important Things to Note:

 * OSHC may not cover everything: Generally, basic OSHC may not fully cover certain services such as dentistry (Dental), optical care (Optical), or extensive physiotherapy. If you require additional cover for these services, you might need to consider a more comprehensive OSHC plan or purchase additional ‘Extras’ cover.

 * Waiting Periods: For some services, particularly complex medical treatments or pregnancy, there may be “waiting periods” before you can claim the cost of treatment. This is a period during which you must hold OSHC before you can utilise benefits for that service.

 * OSHC Providers: Currently, several insurance companies are authorised to provide OSHC, including Bupa, Medibank, Allianz Care Australia, NIB, and ahm. You are free to choose your preferred provider.

Key Points and Further Advice:

 * Choose a Suitable Provider: Research and compare insurance plans from different OSHC providers to ensure you get cover that suits your needs and budget.

 * Duration of Cover: Make sure your OSHC covers the entire period you will be residing in Australia under your student visa.

 * Understand Your Policy: Read the terms and conditions of your policy carefully, paying close attention to exclusions, waiting periods, and how to make a claim.

 * Keep Your OSHC Documents Safe: Upon your arrival in Australia, you will receive an OSHC membership card or policy information. Keep these documents safe for making claims or contacting your provider.

 * Contact Your OSHC Provider Directly: If you have any questions about your cover, or need to make a claim, always contact your OSHC provider directly.

Having OSHC is not just a legal requirement; it’s an investment in your peace of mind and well-being whilst abroad. Should any emergencies or health issues arise, you’ll receive the necessary care without the worry of hefty expenses.
